Ο Balmain γεννήθηκε το 1914 στη Γαλλία. Ο πατέρας του κατείχε μια υφασματεμπορία και η μητέρα και η αδερφή του κατείχαν μια μπουτίκ μόδας όπου εργαζόταν συχνά μετά το θάνατο του πατέρα του το 1921. Παρακολούθησε το École des Beaux-Arts το 1933-1934, με πρόθεση να σπουδάσει αρχιτεκτονική, αλλά αντίθετα κατέληξε να δαπανήσει το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του χρόνου του σχεδιάζει φορέματα. Αφού εργάστηκε για τον ατελιέ Robert Piquet ως ανεξάρτητος καλλιτέχνης και πέρασε χρόνο με τον Edward Molyneux, έφυγε από το σχολείο για να εργαστεί στη Molyneux. Στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1930, υπηρέτησε στη γαλλική πολεμική αεροπορία και στο στρατό πρωτοπόρο. Μετά την κήρυξη της ειρήνης, εργάστηκε στο Lucien Lelong και άνοιξε το δικό του σπίτι μόδας με το όνομά του στα 44, rue François 1er στο Παρίσι. Κυκλοφόρησε την πρώτη του συλλογή τον Οκτώβριο του 1945 και το πρώτο του άρωμα, Jolie Madame το 1949.

Κατά την περίοδο μετά τον Β 'Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, ο Pierre Balmain ήταν «βασιλιάς της γαλλικής μόδας» και εξοπλίζει αστέρια, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των Ava Gardner και Brigitte Bardot, της πρώτης κυρίας της Νικαράγουας Hope Portocarrero, και της βασίλισσας Sirikit της Ταϊλάνδης.
